This October in our Scottsdale gallery, we are pleased to present a new, fresh and vibrant fall art show that is certain to generate enthusiasm from collectors old and new! While in past years, our October show primarily focused on western art, the new format of our event highlights many of the gallery’s most established artists with a selection of new works with genres ranging from western and wildlife to figuratives works, landscapes and impressionism. Our show coincides with “The West Select” the new invitational event that debuts at the Phoenix Art Museum. It promises to be a spectacular weekend of art filled events. Things kick off with a major gallery art walk in Scottsdale on Thursday evening October 20th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. On Friday October 21st, our gallery will have an all day viewing of the new works being offered in our Fall Classics show. Following on Saturday, October 22nd, we will have a major artists’ reception at the gallery from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. An added bonus to our busy weekend show is a new selection of work by Z. S. Liang. His attention to detail combined with the historical and narrative elements of his paintings have firmly established him among the ranks of the finest western representational painters in the country today! With the long, hot summer behind us, October is a wonderful time to visit the Valley of the Sun and experience all it has to offer: five-star resort hotels, fine dining, abundant recreational opportunities and of course, a dynamic art scene in Old Town Scottsdale which we are proud to be a part of. I trust you will enjoy our newsletter and keep in mind that this is just a sampling of the fine works that will be available during our Fall Classics exhibition and sale. Please visit our website at www.trailsidegalleries.com to view the entire show.
As summer is waning, we welcome the first signs of autumn here in Jackson, Wyoming. This is always a special time in the valley, when Nature puts on a spectacular display of earthy and rich fall colors and the wildlife viewing is at its most active. Our annual Fall Gold show on Saturday, September 17, is an event that celebrates the very essence of nature and all things wild, as we highlight works from both past and present wildlife masters. Our show will feature a rich and diverse mix of wildlife subjects and sporting art by such noted artists as Carl Rungius, Tucker Smith, James Morgan, Nancy Glazier, John and Suzie Seerey-Lester, Gerald Balciar, Bonnie Marris, Lindsay Scott, Ralph Oberg, Joseph Sulkowski, John Demott, Kent Ullberg, Sherry Sander, and J.C. Dye. During this event, we are also pleased to introduce new paintings by Arizona-based painter Dustin Van Wechel, a rising young talent in the field of wildlife art! We also welcome Sueellen Ross to our artist roster. This Seattle native is renowned for her charming mixed media paintings of various breeds of dogs and cats as well as birds. Our afternoon artists’ reception will feature special showcases for sculptor and painter Veryl Goodnight, fresh off her successful retrospective show at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Veryl will be at the gallery signing her recently published book “No Turning Back,” in which she shares stories in her own words of the animals, landscape, and history that have influenced her four decades of work. Also featured is Montana-based Kyle Sims, who enjoyed a sellout show at the gallery last September. Kyle’s newest paintings will be sold by draw at our artists’ reception on Saturday, September 17, at 6:00 pm mountain time. The annual Jackson Hole Art Auction will also be taking place that Saturday at the Center for The Arts beginning at 12:30 pm. Now in its 5th year, the auction will once again focus on important works by the Taos Society of Artists, The Santa Fe Art Colony as well as historically recognized artists of the American West. Contemporary western masters will also be prominently featured with major new works. Please join us for what promises to be an extraordinary weekend of art filled events! Our summer show schedule in Jackson, Wyoming is in full swing, and the month of August is a busy one for the gallery as we host our ever popular Western Classics exhibition and sale. This event highlights new works from our roster of artists who have devoted their lives and careers to interpreting and celebrating the great American West. Our event features paintings and sculpture that depict subjects ranging from working cowboys, historic Native American themes and western landscapes. During this event, the gallery will also present "Western Journey," a showcase of new works by Jeffrey Watts and Gary Ernest Smith. California based artist Jeffrey Watts is a skilled interpreter of many subjects including figural works, portraits and landscapes. However, his 2011 showcase with Trailside focuses on narrative western genre painting, with an emphasis on the mountain man era of the mid 1800’s. We are also very pleased to show a new collection of work by renowned Utah-based painter, Gary Ernest Smith. I personally have known and admired Gary for some 25 years, and I am delighted we have the opportunity to offer a stunning new collection of paintings that celebrate the rural lifestyle of the west and the values of hard work and self reliance. Looking ahead towards the fall, please note that you can visit our website to see periodic updates on new and incoming art and get an early bird view of our September shows. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that the 5th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction will take place on Saturday, September 17th, 2011. You can view the online catalog at www.jhaa.com to get a preview of the sale. We look forward to seeing you in the gallery!

This first major group show of the season, set in spectacularly beautiful Jackson Hole in June, is the collector’s first stop for the finest in historical and contemporary western art. This year Trailside Galleries will feature an outstanding and diverse showcase of new work by all gallery artists, in varying styles, sizes, and genres. Don’t miss new work by Bonnie Marris, Ralph Oberg, Robert Moore, Matt Smith, Dan Mieduch, Bill Anton, Kyle Sims, Howard Rogers, Nicholas Coleman, Brent Cotton, and Z.S. Liang, among many others. Please join us in the green mountains and wildflowers of Jackson Hole in June, for Salute to Summer!
We are pleased to bring you our early spring newsletter edition! In this issue, we highlight three showcases that will be on exhibit throughout the month of April in the Scottsdale, Arizona gallery. It was six years ago that we first started hosting our East Meets West show, an event that highlights the tremendous talents of several Chinese artists represented at Trailside. The show began with a small handful of artists and has now grown to feature a multitude of distinguished painters of Chinese heritage. Without a doubt, the common denominator among these painters is the formal and intensely academic training they each received in their native homeland. As these artists continue to find both critical and financial success in the western hemisphere, they also continue to redefine Chinese art, blending Western influences with their unique and ancient heritage. During the month of April, we are extremely honored to feature a selection of paintings by Joseph Sulkowski, one of the world’s leading equine and canine artists. Sulkowski’s paintings can be described as a fusion of masterful 16th and 17th century Italian and Flemish techniques with a brilliant contemporary air for expressive brushwork and luminous color that energizes his work. New Yorker Gregg Kreutz will also be featured in our Scottsdale gallery with a new collection of work. Gregg creates dramatic jewel-toned canvases that include genre scenes, still lifes and landscapes. He is an award winning painter and author of the classic aritst’s guide “Problem Solving for Oil Painters,” now in its twentieth year of publication.
The Arizona tourist season is in full swing and the gallery scene in Scottsdale is at its busiest, with many locals as well as visiting collectors coming through our doors. One of the highlights of our late winter/early spring show season is our annual Western Classics show in March. This show brings together a large group of like-minded individuals who all share a mutual interest in celebrating the West through their artwork. Whether a contemporary scene or historical view point, the works featured in our show fire our imaginations about the people, culture and landscapes of the great American West. As part of the Western Classics show, we are also pleased to host a small showcase of new works from California painter Tim Solliday. Tim’s landscapes and figural works are powerful images imbued with bold brushwork, a masterful use of natural light and a highly colorful palette. Please check our website at www.trailsidegalleries.com to view additional new paintings for Tim’s showcase. Our Wildlife Discovery show is currently hanging in the Jackson, Wyoming gallery. This annual show celebrates all things natural and wild with new works from many of the top wildlife painters in the country. Participating artists include Jim Morgan, Bonnie Marris, Nancy Glazier, Lindsay Scott, Linda St. Clair, Kyle Sims, Adriano Manocchia, Ralph Oberg, and Sara Woods. While these artists each bring their own unique interpretation of animals and landscape to the canvas, they all share a deep commitment to wildlife and our natural world.
We are very pleased to bring you our first gallery newsletter of 2011. As we look forward to a busy schedule of shows and events at our two gallery locations as well as our annual Jackson Hole Art Auction later in September, I hope you have the opportunity to plan ahead and visit our galleries sometime during the course of this year! Our busy winter art season is well under way in Scottsdale and we are delighted to host our first major one-woman show for Santa Fe artist Linda St. Clair. Collectors know Linda for her warm and colorful portraits of domestic and farm animals. These favorite subjects will most certainly be well represented during our show. However, an added bonus is a new body of work inspired by an amazing trip to East Africa in the summer of 2010. Zebras, lions, cheetahs and elephants have found their way to Linda’s easel and the finished paintings are marvelous! Later in February, we bring together the talents of Robert Moore and Mike Malm in a two-man show. This event will spotlight Mike’s classically elegant figural work and Robert’s distinctive, high key palette through which he captures his beautiful landscapes and forest interiors. California painter Dan McCaw also has a new body of work that we are pleased to showcase in our Jackson gallery. As always, Dan’s newest paintings are bold, expressive and cutting edge. What I have always admired about Dan is his ability to step beyond his comfort zone and bring forth every ounce of creativity to his canvas.
Welcome to Trailside Galleries’ Holiday Miniature Show, “Deck the Walls,” featuring a sampling of wonderful new work by all of our gallery artists. This year’s show will be hosted by our Scottsdale gallery and promises to be a crowd pleaser, offering our collectors a broad range of subjects and artistic styles. In these economic times, smaller works seem to be particularly alluring! These treasures are certainly wonderful stocking stuffers, whether you are giving the gift of art or treating yourself over the Holidays. While 2010 continues to see challenges in our economy, we have nonetheless witnessed the fact that high quality works of art continue to be much sought after. Art is truly a passion, which is why we, as collectors, continue to enrich our lives by surrounding ourselves with beautiful and thought-provoking works of art. As the Holiday season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped us shape our business. We value our relationships with our artists, friends and patrons and we want to take this opportunity to thank all for their continued support and friendship. On behalf of the entire Trailside Family, we send our best wishes to you for Peace and Joy this Holiday season, and a New Year filled with Health, Happiness and Prosperity!
Fall is in the air which means our Scottsdale art season is getting under way! As we welcome cooler, autumn temperatures, we are delighted once again to present our annual Fall Open House on Saturday, October 16th. . While our show introduces new and wonderful works from all our gallery artists, the focus is decidedly western, given that our event coincides with the Cowboy Artists of America show at the Phoenix Art Museum. Our show brings together many of the finest western representational artists in the country including our roster of CAA artists: Wayne Baize, Don Crowley, Fred Fellows, Bruce Greene, Bill Nebeker, Gary Niblett, Jim C. Norton Dave Powell and Gordon Snidow.
During this busy weekend, we are also very pleased to present two outstanding showcases for artists Bill Anton and Z.S. Liang. Always a favorite among collectors, Bill Anton’s newest paintings are imbued with a rich palette, atmospheric mood and a passion that so eloquently conveys the life and times of the contemporary working cowboy. Z. S. Liang introduces a rich and powerful collection of new works focusing on historic Native American subjects.
I am very pleased to report that our 4th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction, held on Saturday, September 18th, did extraordinarily well, with sales nearing 6.5 million. I take it as a very positive sign that collectors were very enthusiastic about the auction, with more than 230 phone bids, over 200 active bidders in the live audience and some 75 absentee bids!
I look forward to having you visit our Scottsdale and Jackson locations in the near future. Please visit our website as well to view the newest works from all our gallery artists!
It’s that time of year again when Mother Nature puts on a spectacular display of fall colors in the valley of Jackson Hole. The entire valley is bathed in a palette of rich tones and earthy colors and the wildlife viewing is exhilarating! With this theme in mind, the gallery celebrates the Autumnal season with “Fall Gold,” a show dedicated to spotlighting a rich and diverse collection of new works from our gallery artists.
Montanan Kyle Sims is quickly becoming a major entity in the world of wildlife art and it is our great pleasure to host Kyle in his first, major one man show at Trailside. In the seven years since we started representing Kyle, we have seen collector demand for this young man’s work outgrow availability; hence, in fairness to all interested collectors, the paintings will be sold by a draw on Saturday, September 18 during our show reception.
The afternoon festivities also include a showcase of recent paintings by Colorado artist Ralph Oberg. While collectors know Ralph best for his superb wildlife paintings set in such spectacular settings as the Alaska tundra and the Rocky Mountains, his newest collection also includes subjects inspired by his recent 150 mile Himalayan trek across Nepal.
Wildlife and equine artist Bonnie Marris has also put together a wonderful collection of new paintings that will be spotlighted in our Fall Gold event. In Bonnie’s newest works we witness once again her wonderful use of light and color imbued in each canvas, and her passion and dedication to all animals and nature’s beauty. The 4th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction is set to take place on Saturday, September 18th beginning at 12:30 in the afternoon. The auction, which will be held at the Center for The Arts, will focus on important works by the Taos Society of Artists and The Santa Fe Art Colony as well as historically recognized artists of the American West. Contemporary western masters will also be prominently featured with major new works.
Please join us for what promises to be an extraordinary weekend of art filled events!
Our August 2010 show schedule is turning out to be quite a busy one, even by our standards! As always, we devote the entire month to our “Western Classics” exhibition and sale. Our event highlights paintings and sculpture that celebrate the great American west and subjects include working cowboys, historic Native American themes and western landscapes. During this show we are very pleased to feature individual showcases for several artists including Utah painter Nicholas Coleman. Nicholas uses a traditional academic approach in his painting, using gouache and oil. While there is a sense of realism to his work, there is also a certain amount of spontaneity and a slight impressionistic feel to his paintings that invokes an atmospheric mood and draws the viewer in. Our showcase for Mikel Donahue offers up a marvelous collection of new paintings that reflect his Oklahoma upbringing. He uses colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic and oils for his realistic depictions of western life, much of it inspired by his grandfather’s stories of the west and his family’s pioneering heritage.
During the month of August we are very pleased to also offer a show of major new works by San Francisco based artist Huihan Liu. His recent paintings are inspired by trips back home to his native China and various trips to Tibet as well. Rounding out the month are additional showcases for artists Bruce Cheever and Tang Wei Min, each of whom have a strong and loyal collector following here at Trailside!
Looking ahead towards the fall, please note that you can visit our website to see periodic updates on new and incoming art and get an early bird view of our September shows. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that the 4th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction will take place on Saturday, September 18th. This year’s auction is looking particularly strong, and I invite you to visit the website at www.jacksonholeartauction.com to get a sneak preview of the sale.
In late May, I made my 25th road trip to head north from our Scottsdale, Arizona gallery to spend the summer at our Jackson, Wyoming location. Needless to say, I think I could just about drive that familiar route blind folded! On second thought, my husband Chuck and I are usually pulling a trailer full of fine art, so maybe we better forget the blindfold!
Arriving in Jackson, I am always reminded about what a spectacular place this is. Mother Nature has endowed this valley with stunning scenic beauty and blessed it with the most diverse and amazing wildlife. No wonder so many fine artists, past and present, have spent time in this valley, endeavoring to capture the rugged and craggy edges of the Teton mountain range, the high alpine meadows, the twisting and turning currents of the Snake River, the cowboy and ranching lifestyle of the valley and the myriad of wildlife indigenous to the area.
I like to think of our annual Salute To Summer show as an event that celebrates the very fiber of this remarkable mountain town. Our artists bring forth a plethora of new works devoted to conveying the spirit of the west. Whether you collect traditional western art, pure landscapes, figurative works or wildlife subjects, this show has it all. On the following pages you will see just a sampling of new artwork which will be featured during this event throughout the month of June. I encourage you to visit our website where you can see the show in its entirety!
Looking ahead, we have a full schedule of shows throughout the summer and early fall season. We will also be hosting the 4th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction on Saturday, September 18th. As always, I invite you to visit us in person, or visit our website to view new works by your favorite artists! We appreciate your continued interest and consideration and we look forward to having you visit the gallery in the near future!
To say that 2009 was a very challenging year for businesses across the country would most certainly be an understatement! From major corporations to mom and pop stores, the sputtering economy has left no one unscathed. That said, I am an eternal optimist and I view these “setbacks” as a challenge to continue to grow and improve upon the ways we conduct our business here at Trailside. More than ever, we are steadfast in our commitment to our customers, which is to listen, communicate and respond swiftly to the needs and interests of our collectors and art enthusiasts. Our 2010 season is well under way and we have a wonderful offering of new and exiting art in both our Scottsdale and Jackson galleries. While the spring season is quickly approaching, there is still plenty of snow on the slopes in Jackson Hole, and winter enthusiasts are taking advantage of warmer temperatures and great skiing conditions. If you happen to be in the area, stop by the gallery and enjoy our current exhibition and sale, Wildlife Discovery, which pays tribute to our natural world and all things wild.
Scottsdale, meanwhile, is enjoying its world famous resort weather, with beautiful blue skies and warm sunny days. Our annual Western Classics show is on view during the entire month of March. As always, this event provides a wonderful platform to experience the historic and contemporary west. Within the Western Classics event, we are also pleased to present A Ranching Tradition, a showcase that brings together the talents of three extraordinary women of the west; Shawn Cameron, Brenda Murphy and Cynthia Rigden. Their collective body of work for this event is a clear testament to the many influences that their western heritage has imbued upon them, both as individuals and fine artists.
We appreciate your continued interest and consideration and we look forward to having you visit the gallery in the near future!
As I was preparing the introduction for our first gallery newsletter of 2009, I questioned whether I should bring up the topic of our current economic malaise. However, it occurred to me that there was really no way to circumnavigate the subject, since it seems no one is untouched by these difficult financial times. Trailside is not immune to the slow down, but there are two constants that keep the gallery in good health, even during the down times: the amazingly talented artists we represent and the consistent quality and service that this gallery provides its patrons. As we all ride out this
